Lacosamide contains Lacosamide, which falls under the category of medications known as Antiepileptics. It is utilized as an adjunctive treatment for partial onset seizures in individuals who are 17 years of age or older.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system, leading to abnormal brain activity, resulting in seizures, altered behavior, unusual sensations, and sometimes loss of consciousness.
Before commencing treatment with Lacosamide, it is essential to inform your healthcare provider if you have ever experienced a certain type of heart rhythm problem known as second or third-degree AV block.
Lacosamide is not recommended for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women. The appropriate dosage will be determined by your doctor based on your child's age, body weight, and the nature of the condition. It is advisable to consult your doctor before starting treatment.
Interaction with alcohol is unknown.
Lacosamide is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking it.
Lacosamide is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking it.
Should not drive or operate machinery until they have become accustomed to any such effects associated with Lacosamide.
There is no interaction between renal impairment and consuming this drug. So dose alteration is not needed.
There is no data available. Please consult a doctor before consuming the drug.
Lacosamide works slowly by inactivating the sodium-gated channels, which decreases the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain and controls seizures or fits.
Common adverse reactions include diplopia, headache, dizziness, and nausea.
Lacosamide is prescribed for the treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients aged 4 years and older. However, the safety of Lacosamide injection has not been established in pediatric patients. Lacosamide injection is indicated for the treatment of partial-onset seizures in adult patients aged 17 years and older.
Lacosamide is believed to provide analgesia by inhibiting sodium channels, primarily affecting depolarized neurons associated with pain and nociceptor hyperexcitability. It also binds to collapsin response mediator protein-2 (CRMP-2), a nervous system phosphoprotein involved in neuronal differentiation and axonal outgrowth. Its role in seizure control is not yet fully understood.
Adults (17 years and older):
Pediatric Patients (4 years to less than 17 years):
Injection:
Strong CYP3A4 or CYP2C9 Inhibitors: Patients with renal or hepatic impairment taking strong inhibitors of CYP3A4 and CYP2C9 may have increased exposure to Lacosamide, potentially requiring dose reduction.
Concomitant Medications that Prolong PR Interval: Lacosamide should be used with caution in patients taking medications that prolong PR interval, such as beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers, due to the risk of AV block or bradycardia.
None specified.
Based on animal data, Lacosamide may cause fetal harm during pregnancy.
Store at 20°C to 25°C.
